Our Purpose

to achieve a lighter human footprint on the island environment. Peaks Environmental Action Team (PEAT) is a volunteer group that was started on Peaks Island in 2006. Island residents felt that it was important to find ways to promote and protect the precious island ecosystem that so many call home. PEAT meetings are open to the entire island community, but are run by a board consisting of members and an AmeriCorps fellow who are committed to making a difference. Seeing a need to bring island gardeners together, PEAT was instrumental in the creation of a community garden. PEAT helped to sponsor a storm window insert build workshop in 2012, building 271 window inserts and helping 22 island families. In 2013 PEAT will be leading window insert workshops on neighboring islands.
