Paij Wadley-Bailey Community Garden
Our Purpose
The Paij Wadley-Bailey Community Garden is a reparations and food sovereignty project created by and for Indigenous, Black, and Brown folks in Vermont. We are everyday people experimenting with different ways we can become responsible for our own and our community’s well being by being in relationship to the Earth. We grow food collectively and are learning together how to distribute what we grow to our community in need, how to store and preserve what we grow through the winter, and how to make medicine from the plants around us. We are informed by the role of Fannie Lou Hamer’s Freedom Farms in demonstrating powerful lessons of how increasing our ability to meet our own needs creates the conditions in which we can build mobilizing capacity. Our goals are explicitly to interrupt racist and oppressive conditions through building our own relationship to the land on our terms - terms that center the agency and worth of all living beings. In teaching folks how to work with foods as medicine and understand their cultural significance, people can begin to heal themselves as they experience the lessons of being intrinsically part of a larger web of life through reciprocal relationships. And as we bring folks together around meals and the compelling and common goal of making sure we can all eat, we strengthen and grow our ability to build and make decisions together.
