Oxford County SWCD
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to...provide leadership, education and technical knowledge in the management and conservation of agricultural and natural resources. Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District works to solve natural resource conservation problems at the county and local level, we promote stewardship of the natural environment, and provide expertise and guidance on projects such as watershed protection, soil health, erosion control, invasive pest management, sustainable forestry practices, and climate resiliency. In 2011, we established a Demonstration Forest Project in Brownfield, Maine which serves as an educational resource area to conduct demonstrations of forestry practices that improve forest health and sustainability, and programs that increase the public awareness of the importance of forest ecosystems in providing environmental services that provide us with clean air and water. In 2022, we received a donation of 200 acres of poorly harvested forest land adjacent to our Demo Forest. With little timber of value left on the property, we decided it would be an excellent location to create a new demonstration project: Agroforestry and Climate Resiliency Demonstration Project. It will show ways to create alternative sources of forest income, increase biodiversity, improve timber stands and soil health and increase carbon sequestration. We feel this is a very timely and much needed project in light of climate change concerns.
