Our Purpose

The purpose of our group is to represent the rights of our residents living in the Orient Heights public housing community. Our housing community is under redevelopment with phase one completed and phase 2 to come online this year. Our board has worked with the developers to make sure we have an open community space for our youth and seniors to gather, included in our design is a park and community garden space. Many of our residents had their own garden but due to the redevelopment, those plots were lost. Our group has worked to bring year-round programs and activities that support the initiatives of the group and our community. Every year we have offered free summer meals to our youth. sponsored by Project Bread. We are looking to create an Urban Garden program in this housing development to teach our youth about nutrition and making the right food choices along with exercise. This program will help decrease rates of obesity by focusing on good lifestyle choices. The added benefit is making plots available to those who lost their plots due to the redevelopment and having them partner with our youth in our Urban Garden Community project creating an inter-generational program
