Our Purpose

The Northeast Federation of Cooperatives was formed to strengthen locally controlled food systems and expand economic power in communities that have been historically excluded from agricultural ownership and decision-making. Across New England, farmers, aspiring producers, and community members face barriers to land access, processing infrastructure, markets, and capital. Our big picture goal is to organize these stakeholders to build shared solutions — including cooperative food businesses, training programs, and community-governed food infrastructure — that democratize the food system and make it more resilient by strengthening local production and regional supply chains. We aim to involve people experiencing food insecurity in meaningful food production, leadership development, and cooperative ownership so they can help shape solutions that directly impact their lives. By supporting grassroots leadership and shared economic models, we are working to build a more equitable, community-driven food system that advances environmental sustainability, community health, and long-term economic stability across the Northeast.
