Our Purpose

The North-Oak Neighborhood Revitalization Zone (NRZ) is a community organization committed to advancing social and economic progress in the North-Oak neighborhood of New Britain, CT.  This neighborhood struggles with persistent poverty and issues of marginalization and oppression and has been making advances through the NRZ.  Formed in 2001, the North-Oak NRZ provides an opportunity for neighborhood stakeholders to organize and address neighborhood concerns. All members of the NRZ are volunteers, including the organization’s elected board. The annual operating budget is never more than a few thousand dollars, due in part to its lack of status as a 501C3 and subsequent inability to accept most funding opportunities.  The North Oak NRZ is a significant generator of social capital within the neighborhood. Community members come together to work within the NRZ that might not interact otherwise. The organization has leveraged this social capital to implement projects such as blight reduction, public safety improvements, community cleanups, community block parties, and youth leadership development programs. The NRZ’s grassroots nature has allowed it to be nimble in responding rapidly to the neighborhood’s immediate needs from COVID-19.
