Summary of Projects

North Hartford Seniors In Action received a grant in 2010 to institute recycling in two senior housing projects, in Hartford, where recycling does not yet exist. Using person to person organizing, tenant surveys and public meetings, the community organizer and leaders of NHSA will help residents design and implement a recycling program for the two housing complexes.

The North Hartford Seniors in Action received a grant in 2009 to help facilitate a dialogue on the future use of the recently closed North Meadows landfill and the environmental protections needed to be in place to protect the health of the community.

North Hartford Seniors in Action received a grant in 2009 to facilitate a dialogue and make a recommendation on the future use of a closed landfill site and the environmental protections that need to be in place to protect the health of the community. This effort engages the senior community around the question of how to use a now closed landfill in the North End (possibilities include a garden or PV solar panels), culminating in a recommendation that will be presented at their annual congress in October as well as made known to the public and the Landfill Advisory Committee, with which NHSIA has close ties.

North Hartford Seniors in Action received a grant in 2003 to persuade the city of Hartford and the Hartford Transit District to switch to low-sulfur diesel fuel with particulate traps in existing elderly transport fleets and to convert to natural gas vehicles as funding for new fleets becomes available.
