New Mainers Public Health Initiative
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to educate, inform, and advise immigrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East on a range of issues and challenges related to good health, nutrition, preventive care such as vaccinations, seeing primary care physicians, understanding the need for screenings, how to work with specialists with a diagnosis, following treatment plans, and taking medication properly. We have four major programs: 1) cancer awareness that covers 12 different types of cancers and explains how to screen and diagnose and what treatment plans are; 2) women's health that covers a wide range of women's health issues and challenges and provides detailed information about how to improve overall health and specific health concerns; 3) working with parents of chilren with developmental diseases and autism spectrum disorders at home, in the community, and in school; and 4) careers in health care and promoting the training and use of community health workers. We are the front line public health organization for immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers in Central Maine. We serve people with vastly different understandings of health and health care, with cultural beliefs that may not be consistent with scientific, evidenced based responses to illnesses, diseases, and trauma related behavioral challenges.
