Our Purpose

to promote the appreciation and preservation of natural resources in New Haven for the benefit and education of the community. We achieve this through community gardening, land conservation and environmental education. The Community Gardening program offers residents an opportunity to grow their own vegetables in shared public spaces. This increases the sense of interconnectivity and collaboration as residents work together to construct the initial garden, maintain the garden and share in its harvest. Our Land Preservation program ensures that parcels around the city are protected from development and offer a safe place for wildlife to thrive and residents to enjoy. All of our activities offer an environmental education benefit to New Haven residents. Youth are important members of the New Haven community and are our future environmental stewards. As an organization, we wish to increase our outreach to and engagement with New Haven's youth.

Summary of Projects

New Haven Land Trust received a grant in 2009 to underwrite wood and other garden supplies to improve upon current and build new garden beds, to build a fence to protect Grand Acres Garden, and to install local community billboards in the gardens to improve communication between gardeners and attract new gardeners.

The New Haven Land Trust received a small grant in 2008 for general support of their garden program and to engage youth in environmental education activities. The New Haven Land Trust plays an integral role in reclaiming vacant lots and they collaborate with the Urban Resources Initiative, a group working on supporting neighborhood level greenspace projects.
