Our purpose is to create a Food Policy Council for the city of New Britain, CT. New Britain is a food swamp, with an over allocation of unhealthy food. There is an issue of low access to healthy and affordable food. New Britain also has a high food insecurity rate, 15.8%, compared to CT's 12% rate and the national 11.1% rate. This city has high rates of chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. In creating a Food Policy Council, the community will be able to make changes to the local food system and address systemic issues that exist, such as systemic racism. We foresee the Food Policy Council using community organizing skills, tools, and tactics to approach issues and make real change in the community.
