Naugatuck Valley Project
Our Purpose
The purpose of our NVP 2021 EJ Organizing work is to develop indigenous leadership and a unified neighborhood vision so that residents of the South End in Waterbury, CT, have a voice and a seat at the decision-making table during the upcoming development process that will direct the decontamination and reuse of 6 large parcels of land in their majority-Latinx community.NVP’s EJ organizing work began in 2019. A small committee of NVP members, several living next to toxic properties in Waterbury’s South End, researched all the toxic properties in Waterbury and Naugatuck. Evaluating the results, committee members decided to combine the clean-up and repurposing of 6 former industrial sites in the South End of Waterbury as one campaign. All the sites are within a 3- mile radius of each other. Progress on one site will affect progress on the other sites. The committee conducted a public tour of the sites in August 2019. They followed-up with a 25-person action, winning their first demand - improved signage, additional fencing, and stronger locks on all 6 properties. During the COVID-19 pandemic, NVP’s EJ committee has conducted individual meetings with potential South End leaders, recruiting 10 new Latinx South Enders to the committee. Working together on Zoom, the EJ committee has planned their campaign with the goal of gaining control of the decisions affecting the health and safety of their community.
