Our Purpose

to address the ecological concerns of the Kennebunk and Mousam Rivers, from the head waters to the ocean. The group's goals are: to improve water quality, to restore native fisheries, and to develop a stewardship for the rivers, connecting people of all communities within the two watersheds.

Summary of Projects

The Rivers Alliance received a grant in 2009 to lead a broadly collaborative research project focused on collecting and sharing information on the histories of two adjacent rivers in southern Maine, the Mousam and the Kennebunk Rivers. The goal is to bring together community resources relating to the human and ecological histories watersheds with the aim of making the results of our research publicly available and locally familiar. This includes collecting oral histories, reviewing the information in state archives, image banks, and meeting with historical societies, and creating outreach opportunities to share the results and incorporate local feedback into planning efforts.
