The mission of MiddPride (middpride.org) is to nurture and grow a sense of community for LGBTQIA+ people in Addison County, Vermont. We started MiddPride as a yearly parade and festival in 2021, to create visibility in our community for our queer and trans friends, family, and neighbors. We especially wanted queer and trans youth to see that there is love and support for them right here at home. Now that we've established our place in the community, it is clear that we have a critical need to create more year-round connection for LGBTQIA+ folks. We have partnered with The Teen Center (teencentervt.org) to expand their community garden and to create monthly potlucks for queer people and allies. Our hope is to foster an inclusive community, with members helping in the garden, sharing produce, and nourishing our community with what we grow. Many people in our community experience food insecurity, and the garden and potluck will be a way for folks to feel empowered to access produce. MiddPride has aleady hosted meetups which have been well attended, and our garden has multiple raised beds as well as fruit trees. We would like to expand with a focus on perennials such as blueberry bushes and raspberry canes. We hope to build a "little free pantry" that the wider community can take from. Our garden is located in our local recreation park, which is utilized daily by many in the community.
