Midcoast Affordable CoHousing
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to build a co-housing community of net-zero-energy, affordable homes in the Midcoast town of St George, Maine. We have a triple emphasis on affordability, clean energy and diversity in ages, incomes and cultural backgrounds. We believe that the concept of sustainability depends on communities that make intentional choices to live in harmony with nature, minimize or eliminate the use of fossil fuels, and include families of all types for vitality, interdependence and social equity. In today's housing environment it is not usual or simple to accomplish these goals in one project but a collaboration with the St George community will make it possible. At least 25% of the homes will be affordable to families who earn less than 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). All homes will be limited in size, and resale covenants will preserve affordability into the future. We will cluster homes closely together to preserve as much of the site as possible. Walking paths among the homes and the common house will foster social interaction among residents. We are collaborating with the St George Community Development Corporation; we can help the CDC (a private 501c3) meet their affordable housing, energy, and economic development goals, and they can help us be more effective in our land search and funding strategies and ensure that we are responsive to the needs of local residents.
