Mashpee Farmers Market
Our Purpose
To encourage community engagement and sustainable living, the Mashpee Farmers Market provides a platform and a place for local farmers and small businesses to connect with residents; in an environmental justice area, Mashpee is classified as a food desert. A small group of residents on our own got certified to accept SNAP and WIC Coupons and host workshops and informal gatherings to address issues. Our mission is built on the understanding that an informed community is vital to developing a sustainable, thriving local food system. Our goal extends beyond selling fresh produce, local seafood, and community creations; we aim to create an open outdoor space for learning, sharing, and growing together. We are about to wrap up our first year in the market. We have been gathering in a space that has long since been an underutilized green within our town center. We now have a central space and time where our older adults can engage in our free wellness with sound baths, general movement, and yoga. Our kids come for play, activity, and our power of produce program, where they get fruit, veggies, or plants free from our farmers to eat and grow independently. It was a fantastic moment to see kids eating cucumbers like corn on the cob with some of our older adults on the grass listening to guitars or a band. This has been the best part of our program: Creating a space filled with healthy activities for the town of Mashpee to gather without the barrier of cost or formal membership.
