Our Purpose

The goal of the Great Works Reading Garden Committee is to create an outdoor reading classroom, cum nature garden, at Maine State Administration District 35's (MSAD 35) fourth- and fifth-grade school, the Marshwood Great Works School (MGWS). As technology increasingly tethers our children indoors and severs them from nature, it is critical that we introduce our students to spaces that will encourage them to enjoy reading and interact intimately with the outdoors. Filled with nooks for reading and a collaborative learning area made lush with native plants and student-made works of art, this aesthetically pleasing, mind-and-body enriching space will offer students, staff and the community a refreshing place in which to learn and grow. Adjacent to MGWS's front door, this peaceful learning refuge will send an immediate signal that literacy, combined with a healthy appreciation for the outdoors (i.e., ecoliteracy), are among the school's fundamental values.
