Our Purpose

Malden Community Land Trust (MCLT) was formed in response to the growing housing crisis in Malden, where rapidly rising rents and housing costs are putting increasing pressure on working-class families, longtime residents, immigrants, and other community members. Too many residents have little control over the future of the homes and neighborhoods they have helped build. Our goal is to build community power while creating a path toward permanently affordable, community-controlled housing. We believe residents should have a meaningful voice in decisions about housing and development in their neighborhoods, and that affordability should be protected for future generations, not just temporarily. MCLT brings together tenant organizing, community education, leadership development, and the Community Land Trust model. We organize residents around immediate housing concerns while also building a long-term alternative in which land and housing can be held in community stewardship. We formed MCLT because we do not want Malden’s response to the housing crisis to be limited to managing displacement after it happens. We want residents most affected by the crisis to help shape and own the solutions.
