Our Purpose

Our purpose is to...Lighthouse Boat Works & Wood Craft provides hands on Boat Building and Woodworking experiences in an educational and therapeutic environment.  Lighthouse was formed to connect local H.S. students to their community through the history and heritage of wooden boat building in the Kennebunks. Gaining life skills while working with wood (locally sourced and/ or reclaimed whenever possible) enhances wellness in young (and older) adults by providing focus, building confidence, and a sense of pride in tangible accomplishments. High Schools in the towns of Kennebunk, Wells, Biddeford, and Sanford are within miles of what was one of the busiest boat building areas in Maine (1800's-early 1900's). We believe that the students attending these schools should have the opportunity to connect with this history by learning a traditional craft which, in some cases will lead to employment in an industry that is currently thriving in their home state.  Lighthouse Boat Works and Wood Craft hosts 4 programs: Lighthouse Apprentice Project-a student boat building program, Wooden Boat repair and restoration-students will assist professional boat builders with repair and restoration of wooden boats, Maritime based workshops-students will assist professional instructors, and Wood Craft creation-students create wood craft.
