Our Purpose

Laraway Farm Stewardship coordinates work-based and ecological learning opportunities for Laraway Youth & Family Services (LYFS), a non-profit in Johnson, VT serving at risk youth and low-income families from across the state. The Laraway School Garden was formed in 2012, a year after LYFS moved to a 39-acre site along the Lamoille River. Working with community partners, volunteers, donors, and program staff we have grown our responsibilities to include hundreds of fruit, nut and conservation trees, a small natural playground, an on-site composting operation, trails, and more. These features provide benefits that ripple through our entire community and beyond. The School Garden is just one of many ways LYFS clients develop the tools needed to succeed in adulthood - through improved nutrition, exposure to new experiences, improved planning and problem-solving skills and an enhanced understanding of natural rhythms, cycles and systems.
