LA Youth and Family Enrichment Services
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to strengthen immigrant families, to build resiliency, to create partnerships, to engage community members--almost entirely young families with children under the age of 10-- to put their skills to use in a way that increases stable and sustainable employment, improve access to community-based resources, and learn financial literacy skills in order to build assets and grow individual family wealth. The founders of the organization--Mohamed, Siad, and Ahmed-- are dedicated to helping the children and young people overcome challenges and barriers to achieving educational and career success. We want to do this work because it is our responsibility as emerging young leaders in the community to lift up the aspirations of young people, to show them good role models, to simply care about the future of each child in the community. We are speaking about thousands of children not a few dozen or hundred. We spent our first year of existence listening--to parents, to older brothers and sisters, to aunts and uncles, to grandparents and especially to the children themselves. We hear the same cries over and over again: "It doesn't matter if we behave the best we can, everything is our fault. It doesn't matter if I get good grades because my parents never went to school and they don't understand or care. I do not have anyone to be friends with, I feel alone. I don't have a future here because no one cares about me." Well we care!
