Keene Mutual Aid
Our Purpose
Keene Mutual Aid is dedicated to building community autonomy and empowerment. As an organization we seek to ensure that everybody in our community can meet their basic needs so that we can all thrive. We operate a weekly free store, distributing free necessities to anybody who comes using a non-means-tested process. We are all-volunteer, and use a horizontal decision-making model which includes the voices of the people we serve as well as our volunteers and supporters. We also strive to operate with as little overhead as possible, to ensure that as much funding as possible is going directly to the most vulnerable members of our community. We primarily serve people who are unhoused, the elderly, and people on public assistance programs, but we also serve a diverse range of folks from all backgrounds who need assistance of various kinds. The free store is not only a place to receive finanical relief, but a safe place to socialize and build a community of solidarity with others who are struggling. We do the work because we believe that everyone should have access to the necessities of life such as food, water, shelter, hygiene and healthcare. We believe that there is enough of all of these things for everyone to have their fair share and then some. We believe that people are the experts on their own experiences, that nobody should have to prove they "need" assistance in order to receive it, and that everbody deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
