Junta for Progressive Action
Our Purpose
The mission of Junta for Progressive Action is to collaborate with Latinx and Immigrant communities in the Greater New Haven area to advance the social, economic and civic environment for all, while embracing Latinx cultural traditions. Junta began in 1969 when sixteen Puerto Rican community organizers banded together to address the challenges that prohibited Latinx advancement. In the 51 years since Junta’s incorporation, New Haven’s population has continued to grow more diverse, with Latinx populations accounting for 3.6% of the population in 1970 compared to 30.3% today. As this population has grown larger - approximately 60% of Fair Haven is composed of Latinx residents - the need for services to combat social, economic, and civic barriers has increased. Junta has expanded its programming to meet the needs of these growing communities and has successfully become the only Latinx multi-service agency in New Haven to provide social services, immigration services, adult education, workforce development and youth programs.
