to preserve the rural character of the area for the benefit and well-being of the inhabitants; acquire and assure the preservation and maintenance of land in the interest of conservation of natural resources and development of an open space program; acquire and assure the preservation and maintenance of land and/or improvements to land having a unique and historical significance to the area; engage in and otherwise promote the scientific study of local natural resources including plants, animals, birds and other wildlife; preserve and maintain areas for education and training in nature lore and camping.
