IOCC (Indian Orchard Citizens Council)
Our Purpose
The Healing Page Collective journaling and book club. This club will provide a safe and supportive environment for students to explore complex issues and develop critical thinking skills through reading, journaling, and discussion. The books selected for this club often contain mature themes and challenging content. We believe that engaging with these topics in a structured and facilitated setting can be a valuable learning experience, fostering empathy, understanding, and critical analysis. Our discussions will focus on the impact of these issues on characters' lives, exploring the consequences of their choices and actions, and examining the broader social and cultural contexts. We will emphasize critical thinking and responsible discussion, avoiding glorification or endorsement of harmful behaviors. For example, the first book we will be reading, Last Night I Sang to the Monster by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, includes potentially sensitive content. While we will not dwell on graphic details, it is important that students are prepared to encounter these themes in the text. Our discussions will focus on the characters' struggles and their journey. We understand that some parents may have concerns about this type of material. We want to assure you that our goal is to create a safe and respectful space for students to explore these issues thoughtfully and responsibly. The discussions will be facilitated by Jaclyn Kopyscinski and will prioritize student well-being.
