Institute for Human and Planetary Flourishing
Our Purpose
IHPF came about as the result of two women’s desire to have a positive impact on college students before they enter their first years working and living on their own. It draws on combined expertise of Gena Mavuli, a nutrition consultant, and Johanna Keefe, a PhD candidate studying ancestral diets and maternal health. We aim to meet the needs and interests of college students, college faculty and the community at large. We want to empower emerging adults to take control of their nutrition and whole body health, so that they not only feel stronger, but also are more likely to birth healthy babies, thus halting the epidemic of non-infectious diseases we see today: diabetes, asthma, allergies, arthritis, among others. Tying human health to that of the planet is also foundational. We see clearly the link between health and the environment and its significance for anyone, regardless of their age, occupation or interests, and we intend to educate young adults about that intersection. Our panels and guest speakers, seminars, meditation and tension release workshops, all provide tools and practical guides to nourishing one’s body and soul in a world of too many choices. IHPF is well positioned to help students transition in a way that will benefit their long term health, in tandem with the local economy and planet as a whole.
