Huertas
Our Purpose
Vermont’s estimated 1,200 Latino/a dairy workers live on farm property in geographically isolated locations. Throughout Vermont, mobility constraints due to a lack of personal transportation and access to public transportation entail significant consequences for accessing food. Even more significant is a realistic fear in the international border counties that visiting a food access point such as a local grocery store, farmers market, or food shelf could result in detention and ultimately deportation. The mission of Huertas is to address disparities in access to nutritious and culturally familiar food while simultaneously bridging the barriers of isolation and social inequalities. Huertas works to increase food security through building gardens and distributing seeds and plant starts to Latino/a migrant farmworkers living in rural Vermont.
