Our Purpose

The Holyoke Food and Equity Collective is an antiracist community organization working to create better access to healthy food in the city of Holyoke by building food sovereignty. On every level from policy change to gleaning, the collective’s goal is to generate health, racial, and economic equity in our community. We have developed a range of initiatives to connect excess available resources with people who need them. These include, gleaning and food rescue from farms, a seedling CSA where participants can use HIP (Healthy Incentive Program) money, building free garden beds and bucket planters for community members, and a twice monthly diaper distribution. This year we are launching our pilot community compost hub, where community members can compost their food scraps for free while taking part in creating fertile soil for growing more food. Since our inception we have gotten involved in food policy, bringing forth a hen ordinance, hosting a candidate's forum, and talking to local politicians about HIP and why it should continue to be funded.
