The formation of the Hinsdale Community Garden (HCG) came about as part of a community project of one of the founding members who is a dietetic intern at Keene State College in Keene, NH and a homeowner within the Hinsdale community. In a needs assessment of the town, it was found that access to affordable, healthy foods was an issue for many residents and there was a lot of interest in the formation of a community garden among many community members around town. The purpose of the HCG is first and foremost to provide increased access to healthy foods in our community. Hinsdale, NH is a small town with several of our residents living in low-income housing with little or no access to gardening space. In addition to limited space, low-income community members report having limited funds to purchase healthy foods. The HCG hopes to bridge the barriers to healthy eating and nutrition to strengthen our community by providing an area for families to grow their own foods. In addition, our group will help provide the resources to teach individuals about gardening. The HCG believes that gardening is a life skill that can liberating and beneficial to both individuals, families and our community. As part of these resources we plan to hold workshops from seed to harvest for our gardeners which will be taught by fellow members. The HCG will continue to promote educational opportunities through-out the community. In addition, the HCG encourages participation from any other community members who have skills they would like to share within their community. At this point in time the HCG will be located at 49 School Street in Hinsdale, NH. The HCG has been given permission to utilize six raised beds and a plot of land located on school grounds between the Hinsdale High School and the Hinsdale School District SAU building. At this point in time aside from the location the HCG will not be associated with the schools.
