In 2009, HVNC received a grant to create a comprehensive interpretive guide to an 800 acre preserve to be used by community members and by the group on its ongoing educational programs. The project consisted of four distinct phases: 1. conduct an inventory of HVNC's flora, fauna and habitats, including the designation of 'areas of special interest' because of their unique or unusual habitat or ecosystem; 2. with the help of local students, label many of the plants, especially the more common and the more rare ones and create interpretive plaques on wooden sign posts; 3. create a downloadable comprehensive interpretive guide to the flora, fauna and habitats; and 4. host at least four educational events in 2010 which will highlight the labeled species and 'special areas' along each trail, including one event on sustainable forestry.
