Hearty Meals for All received a grant in 2009 to continue to develop their free community meals program created to meet the nutritional and social needs of the community. The program goals include promoting environmentally sustainable practices such as gardening, obtaining locally grown food and using reusable dishes and utensils and recycling.
Hearty Meals for All
Our Purpose
Hearty Meals for all (HMFA) is a free meal program in Davis Square in Somerville. The program serves an average of 50 guests each month. Meals are made from scratch using fresh, local and organic ingredients whenever possible. Food is sources from local farms and Somerville businesses like When Pigs Fly Bakery and Dave's Fresh Pasta. Food is served in a welcoming atmosphere where guests are served their meal and volunteers eat at tables with guests minimizing the distinction between volunteers and guests. A Board of Directors has been in existence for a year. In addition, with funding from the NE Grassroots Fund, we began paying two staff members this year, our Executive Chef and Program Coordinator. We recently submitted an application for 501(c)3 tax exemption status, which will make the program more sustainable. Our core purpose is to provide healthy, locally sourced food to those in need in a warm and welcoming environment.
