to provide service learning opportunities to connect students with the community by planning for and growing garden vegetables and then harvesting and sharing the produce. This will provide many lesson and activity foci across the school curriculum. The core group is made up of seventh grade teachers at Hazen Union School and we are all gardeners of some stripe. We always try to put lessons into context and to provide real experiences for our students. For instance, a math teacher plans to use our raised beds for problems involving volumes, surface areas, geometric spacing, projected and actual yields, percents, scale drawing, and measurement, to name a few. The science benchmarks include plant physiology, reproduction and genetics. The new Common Core Language Arts standards emphasize reading and writing informational literature and gardening is a rich source.
