Hartsbrook School Permaculture Committee
Our Purpose
to nurture our students through art and practical work in addition to academics. We have a farm component to education. The children care for animals, keep bees and grow wheat. The students love to be outside and to create relationships with the lives they care for. This summer, we would like to extend our land stewardship program to include permaculture. We hope to install a permaculture garden in the 3rd week of may with the high school students. We believe it is an important addition to our program because it is closer to a natural system. Now, the growing the children partake in is heavily orchestrated by people and the plants are only annuals. Creating a permaculture garden would teach Hartsbrook students more about perennial plants and how food systems grow in a habitat closer to that of a forest. We aim to expand the students' knowledge and challenge their preconceptions about what it means to grow food.
