Our Purpose

Our purpose is to support, recruit, and promote young farmers in America. We are a small grassroots organization based in Pembroke, Maine. Our outreach is local and national, with our combined social media platforms (Mailchimp, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) reaching over 100,000 (and combined with our sister organizations National Young Farmers Coalition and Agrarian Trust, 300,000). Seaweed Commons is a project of Greenhorns that was founded in 2017 by Severine Fleming and Emma O’Leary, and taken up by Lydia Lapporte in 2019 when she was 21 years old. Seaweed Commons seeks to form ecological seaweed coalitions, support and inform public discourse, increase algal literacy, and advocate for an appropriately scaled, just seaweed economy. By providing the public with nuanced and accessible information on the politics, ecology, governance, and economy of marine algae, we aim to promote an open and informed public discourse essential to responsible decision-making and resource management. Seaweed Commons' work has included workshops, symposia, the production of educational materials, a website/info repository, and organizing with partners to shift the regulatory environment around seaweed.
