Our Purpose

For this campaign, we are calling ourselves the Greenfieldrightsofnature group. Our purpose is to raise awareness and take actions to help protect the environment in our community.  We are currently collecting signatures on a petition in order to get an ordinance to reduce plastic in the waste cycle to referendum. As of this writing, over 30% of the needed signatures have been gathered. We have collected 1460 signatures as of June 18th, 2015 and submitted to Town Clerk who has certified 1251.  The required amount is 1093.  It has now been submitted to our Town Council for review. In our education campaign, we created a flier which we distributed at the Free Havest Supper, and to the public at large.  We placed an ad in the Franklin County Fair program as well as in the Greenfield Recorder and are planning several more.   In the past 3 weeks, one of our members had a live interview on a local radio program.    In addition, we have obtained from a local business the information we need regarding the cost of reusable bags, with our logo, intended for public distribution to raise awareness of our campaign and the issue of plastic waste. On September 24, we have a meeting scheduled with the three major supermarkets in town to discuss the possibility of a bag distribution event in front of their stores to involve local high school students.  Notably, in the coming months,  we plan to show the film "Bag It" to the public, to be followed by a panel discussion and forum. Given the timeline we have been given by the Town, we expect to have the referendum for our ordinance sometime in the Spring of 2015.
