Green Garden Gang
Our Purpose
All types of pollinators are vanishing, in large part due to development and pesticide use. The Green Garden Gang (GGG) recognizes the environmental and human consequences of such loss and has come together to try to protect pollinators. The overall goal of our work is to raise public awareness of pollinator decline and to put Hebron, CT on the Pollinator Pathway (PP) (see https://www.pollinator-pathway.org) by creating pesticide-free corridors of public and private properties that provide safe native plant habitat and nutrition for pollinators. The GGG considers this work essential to environmental diversity, the sustainability of our planet, and the integrity of our food supply. In addition to establishing pollinator pathway gardens, the GGG will engage in public outreach to educate, demonstrate, advertise, and promote three essential elements of pollinator-friendly habitat: (1) the importance of planting native trees, flowers, and shrubs; (2) the critical need to limit pesticide use; and (3) the value of and need for reducing lawns. The results of our efforts will be "connected" residential, municipal, business, religious, and open space areas that will grow and maintain safe and nutritious habitat within 1/2 mile of each other (the range of native bees), thereby providing pollinators with a healthy habitat. The pollinator gardens planted by the GGG will serve as models for the community.
