Our Purpose

Public natural burial grounds became legal in Vermont in 2015 and a bill changing the mininum burial depth to accommodate green burials was recently passed in the VT legislature. As yet, however, only one VT cemetery advertises natural burials. Knowing that many Vermonters care deeply about their ecological footprint and/or have religious reasons for wanting a green burial (i.e., no embalming fluid or non-degradable casket or vault, and cemetery land managed in an ecologically sensitive way), our group formed in order to make green burial an option for more people in our communities. The purpose of this group is to facilitate the creation and operation of green cemeteries (both "hybrid" cemeteries that offer a green burial section in an existing cemetery, as well as "conservation" burial grounds that preserve land for the purpose of natural burial).
