Grad Bag, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a dual mission: to support college-bound students from historically underserved communities, and to advance environmental sustainability through waste diversion and reuse. Our organization helps students make a more equitable transition to college by collecting, refreshing, and repackaging lightly used dorm room essentials for redistribution to incoming students in need. Grad Bag's formation came when two mothers were shocked by the waste they saw moving their children out of their dorm rooms. They knew there was a better way; one that would also help students in need succeed in school without the added burden of paying to furnish their dorm rooms, and one that would keep tons of high quality items out of dumpsters and landfills. Since its inception,Grad Bag has worked with colleges and community partners to collect and provide students with the essential items they need, reducing the financial burden on families while promoting sustainability. A shocking 59% of students have considered dropping out of college due to financial stress; these numbers grow even higher when a student is the first in their family to attend higher education. The majority of the students we serve are first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds; many come to us referred by foster care agencies, and some are new Americans or refugees. We have also diverted more than 220 tons of materials from the waste stream.
