Our Purpose

Gladiator Greens was formed by the Boston Green Academy CTE class in environmental science to Fight Hunger, Grow Community using the school's new Freight Farm as a vehicle to grow and distribute edible greens to the community. They are also working on a plan to increase crops by adding raised beds on school property to supplement the greens by growing vegetables.  61% of BGA students are econmically disadvantaged and commute to Brighton from Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan, where urban food deserts still exist.  The group's interest in Environmental Science and in learning about the science of producing food using hydroponic growth in a freight farm led them to immediately think about feeding their families and the community with their produce. Gladiator Greens is student-created, and makes all decisions by consensus. Students present ideas for packaging, marketing, distribution, and growth, are creating systems for managing inventory and distribution. The environmental science teacher acts as a mentor, and brings in professionals to work with students on particular topics (like spredsheets)  when students specifically request more information.
