Our Purpose

Georgetown Central School is a Pre k - 6 school located on an island in Maine.  We have had a program for gardening led by our students for over a decade, and we wish to continue funding this program.  We hire a Garden Coordinator for a small stipend to work with volunteers and students to plan and implement our program.  Our students started this project to grow their own food, learn about many facets of gardening and do community service. We have a hoop house, outdoor garden, memorial garden, herb garden, bulb garden, pizza oven and bees as a part of our project.  We facilitate a garden club throughout the fall and spring and summer.  We have many volunteers in our project that donate time and energy to our work.  It makes it very worthwhile for our students as the work is integrated into our curriculum and daily lives here as Georgetown Central School students and staff.  It ties in nicely especially this year, as we are focusing our efforts on a lot of outdoor learning.  Kids are excited to go out to the garden and donate our produce to our local gleaning program.
