Our Purpose

Our purpose is to establish a permaculture education garden that will be sustainable and largely self-sufficient. Outlook is an experiential-based alternative education program that serves at- risk 9th and 10th grade students.  Our curriculum is centered upon the theme of sustainability and we examine each topic of study by considering its environmental, economic and social impacts. In each of the three years that the program has been in place, students have studied basic ecology, water issues, climate change and our food system.  Students have built a greenhouse and a raised garden bed. This year we are beginning the process of transforming the land around these structures into a permaculture installation that will serve as a prominent and perennial hands-on component of our curriculum. Students recently participated in the first of two workshops with a professional designer and installer of sustainable landscapes. They learned the principles and tenants of permaculture and are working on preliminary designs for our space that incorporate these principles and consider the inputs and outputs of each component of their design.  In addition to becoming a source of fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables we want our project to serve as a permaculture teaching garden for all Fryeburg Academy students, elementary and middle school students and interested community members. Our garden will model sustainable food production and planting practices and provide an example of permaculture design. Outlook students will care for and harvest the garden and will serve to educate those who visit the garden to learn about sustainable gardening practices. Once established the garden will allow Outlook students to perform community service right at our own facility.
