Friends of the Fore River Bridge Project
Our Purpose
Our mission is to create awareness and energize residents in the communities of Quincy and Weymouth, MA about an opportunity to revitalize an area on both sides of the new Fore River Bridge currently being built and scheduled for completion in mid 2017. The project has been ongoing for nearly fifteen years and when finished will be the largest public works project in South Shore history. The project has taken its toll on the local communities by causing endless delays and disrupting local businesses. Home values in the area have also been affected by construction noise and traffic problems relted to a temporary bridge. The Fore River Bridge has been the lifeline to the entire south coastal area for a hundred years and is the gateway to the historic town of Weymouth. It crosses the river at the former site of the historically significant Quincy Shipyard. Our plan is to create a grass roots organization and planning group, consisting of local residents and business leaders whose task it will be to plan and manage a series of events in conjunction with the bridge ribbon cutting ceremony. This will involve partnering with several non profit (501c3) organizations who will become the beneficieries of the proceeds which will be dedicated to specific improvement projects in the Fore River Basin and designed to enhance the approaches to the bridge. We will raise funds by soliciting sponsors from the corpoate and local business communities in the area and thru grant opportunities. The events being planned will include a participant registration fee and may include such activities as a bike ride, road race/walk, boat flotilla, concert, classic car rally, etc... Once the events have been held and the related expenses are paid, the remaining funds will be distributed to the affiliated charities to perform the community improvement projects which have been agreed upon. We are currently meeting with a local garden club to determine if they can manage the installation of greenscapes at the approaches to the bridge. We believe this will soften the hard bridge surfaces to help create an urban oasis. Another organization which we are considering is the US Naval Shipbuilding Museum which is located next to the bridge. Our goal is to help them to create more environmental and maritime based sustainable educational opportunities to support clean water, safe and responsible boating and fishing. The overall goal is to reinvigorate the area around the bridge in the aftermath of the long construction project in which many of the local businesses and residences have suffered, resulting in urban blight, abandoned storefronts and unkept properties. We believe the completion of the bridge in conjunction with our grass roots efforts will greatly improve the area and encourage new investment. We also feel that by including these organizations we will gain the support of their volunteers.
