Our Purpose

Our purpose is to reduce the use of fossil fuels by the individuals and businesses in our town of Freeport, Maine, home to LLBean and destination for thousands of tourists.  We aim to do this by forming relationships with people in our town around specific community actions designed to educate and promote behavior change which results in living in harmony with the enviornmental needs of our community and our planet.  We aim to do this in an inclusive way, keeping in mind that, even in a prosperous town like Freeport, there are many people who are affected by high fuel costs, high food costs and are unable to afford the high end fancy heat pumps and cars so trumpeted by the environmental movement.  We formed our group four years ago in response to the fear and grief of watching a scarlet rising sun, its color altered by the fires thousands of miles out west.  We brought together friends and friends of friends and talked about our fear and grief.  Our solution was not to be alone, but to create change together,  recognizing both the existential crisis we face and the fact that joy arisis from connection.   Our goal is to "scale up" so that we become a model for other communities to follow.  We believe change happens in many ways that cannot be known ahead of time.
