Our Purpose

Our group consists of members of the senior class and post graduates of Franklin Academy in East Haddam, CT. Franklin Academy (501 c 3) serves high school and postgraduate students with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Asperger’s Syndrome, preparing them for college, career, and adult life. Therefore, the Capstone Project(s) are an experiential and service learning activity that is the culmination of our student’s academic, intellectual, social, (and possibly even spiritual) high school experiences. The goals and objectives of these experiences are: To demonstrate learning and proficiency (skills), to maintain academic rigor and student engagement in the last semester of high school, to increase educational and career aspirations, to improve self-confidence and self-perception, and last but no least to actively contribute to the vitality of our local community, model service and leave a legacy for future students and/or the community.     The project(s) are multifaceted in the sense that they are interdisciplinary and require the application of skills from many different areas. For example, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, self-sufficiency, and reflection. The project(s) usually consist of at least five groups of students working with a variety of local organizations that have different business models (e.g. non-profit organizations and for-profit small businesses and charities). This year we will be volunteering with GoodWill in Norwich, the East Haddam Land Trust (which is the project we are requesting funding for), Wrassling Cats Café, Covenant Shelter, East Haddam Parks and Recreation, the iPark Foundation, and we will also have an On Campus group doing a variety of construction projects.     Prior to participation in the service-learning portion of the project, groups will conduct research and interviews, while participating they will document their experience and have opportunities to share with other groups, following completion they will create a presentation for the Franklin community.
