Evergreen Lots is a community group formed in Bushwick, Brooklyn to facilitate access to unused, public lots. We cultivate access to potential garden spaces in order to create an engaged community. Our aim is to build this ecosystem through small but impactful measures, such as community gardening, composting, production farming, and educational programming. EL Garden is the first vacant lot that Evergreen Lots has acquired. We leased it from NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, through NYC Parks GreenThumb, in September 2013. The lot is located in Bushwick, a low-income, underserved neighborhood in Brooklyn with little access to affordable, fresh produce as well as community green space. The aim of building a community garden in a vacant lot is to provide the community with a place where they can safely and productively gather, grow and receive fresh produce, participate in art and educational activities, and learn about growing and eating healthy food.
