In 2010, ECC was awarded a grant to update their organizational brochure in English and Spanish. ECC will print 2,000 copies in English and 1,000 copies in Spanish for distribution throughout New Haven and to make available in key locations in the surrounding towns of Hamden, West Haven and East Haven. In addition ECC is working on "rules of the road" flyers in Spanish and English, and supporting bike clinics to help Latino residents (youth and adults) repair their bikes and get safety equipment and information.
Elm City Cycling
Our Purpose
to promote Complete Streets in New Haven where all users feel safe and accommodated, since New Haven has one of New England's highest bicycle commuting rates. Additionally, we work with advocates in surrounding towns to create safe, efficient bicycle commuting networks and promote cycling as a healthy, environmentally friendly and cost-effective means of transportation.
Summary of Projects
A 2008 grant was used to carry out three Bike Jamborees with/for New Haven youth, beginning July 1, to increase safety awareness and practice. The group also designed, printed and distributed throughout New Haven brochures about the accomplishments, activities and goals of Elm City Cycling.
Elm City Cycling received a grant in 2005 to distribute bicycle lights to at-risk youth in New Haven, along with bike maps containing bike-safety information, in order to help youth bike safely and help everyone share the road. Increased bicycling in turn will improve energy use, air quality, the urban environment and the sustainability of New Haven.
