Our Purpose

Our purpose is to decrease solid waste that Durham sends to the landfill, beginning with a campaign to increase recycling, reduce contamination within the waste stream, and increase composting.  Currently Durham diverts around 35%, and our goal is to divert 45%.   Durham's Integrated Waste Management Advisory Committee believes that education on recycling and composting best practices, along with effective use of the transfer station, are key to meeting and exceeding the state's recommended 40% diversion goal.  In 2019, Durham proposed a Pay As You Throw program, which met with stiff pushback, so we are seeking other methods to engage the public.  We had 3 Compost Challenges 2020-2021 .  Since March 2020 we have been inviting citizen questions about recycling, through our “Did You Know?” column in Durham’s weekly listserve -- and the questions we receive help us gauge how much information the public still needs.  The  education campaign to Recycle Right will also provide Durham with the tools to continue toward further reductions, as we work with community stakeholders (UNH, landlords, businesses, public schools, residents) and maintain and publish our data around categories of solid waste, recycling and composting, to determine next steps in reducing matter sent to the waste stream.
