Our Purpose

The DownEast Wood Bank (DEWB) is an all volunteer program that was initiated to help families who are experiencing some type of heating crisis.  We offer free seasoned firewood to families who for some reason can not heat their homes because they are temporarily ooy of fuel or funds to purchase fuel.  We offer 1/3 cord of wood for those who have a wood stove or fireplace and need supplemental heat.  We feel strongly that families should not haveto give up basic necessities to stay warm in cold Maine weather.  We treat our firewood clients with dignity and respect and do not require any proof of need other than their request.  Our firewood comes from local tree companies, landscaping companies and individuals who have downed trees but have no way to properly dispose of them.  By repurposing the wood we save it from rotting and use itfor a practical purpose.  All volunteers believe in our mission of helping those in need and helping to improve our environment by repurposing wood.  We inviteand encourage recipients to "pay it forward" by volunteering theirtime to DEWB orother worthy organizations in the community.
