Coventry Community Garden
Our Purpose
This teaching garden which was established in the spring of 2008 has grown tons of produce for the Coventry Food Bank. We have recently celebrated our 10th year of feeding our most needy families in our town. This garden is administered through the Town of Coventry Department of Human Services and volunteers readily give their time to work in the garden. Groups of volunteers include the following; Senior citizens who attend the Coventry Senior Center, youth groups such as girl scouts, boy scouts and 4H members, even students from kindergarten to college students and their families. Master Gardeners from the University of Rhode Island, who are Coventry residents themselves, donate their time to teach organic growing practices and integrative pest management as these volunteers are in the garden, in schools and in the community. We presently feed over 500 people per month 2/3rds are children. Our garden has grown in size and scope over the past ten plus years. The adjoining area which was previously utilzed as a ball field now has a newlyconstructed gazebo and is now a meeting place for concerts, car shows and public events. As a result of our garden we now are developing a true center of town where we can gather, learn, grow and be entertained. Our goal is to expand a Community Farmer's Market during the spring and summer months this year to grow our community connections, as we grow our organic produce for the Coventry Commuinty Food Bank.
