Our Purpose

We are a community bike shop building a more equitable city by getting people on bikes. New Haven is a city in need; segregation, income inequality, and lack of services are constant systemic problems. Bikes are sustainable, affordable, and build systems of change while improving health and well-being and connecting people with nature and their community. We run a bike recycling program, a tool-sharing library, and a community hub, getting more bikes on the road to build a healthy, diverse, and inclusive community. We receive bikes from around Connecticut, train volunteers to repair them, and partner with other organizations to donate these bikes back into the community. We help existing riders fix and maintain their bikes during “Shop Hours” and offer classes for people to learn bike mechanic skills. Our volunteers come from all over, but regardless of their background, Shop Hours give them a place to be experts; welcoming, helping, and teaching customers. Outside of Shop Hours, we open up the space for community groups and events, and are always trying to use our network to its fullest potential; connecting the right people and resources to build a great city.People come to us in need of a bike or bike repairs, but leave with an introduction to the greater community with new ideas for relating and interacting with their city; buying local, reducing their footprint, fighting inequality, and connecting and engaging with the city we share.
