Our Purpose

The purpose of CityGreens is to provide residents of New York City with their own "little urban garden," which is a gardening kit that provides a pot, soil, seeds of your choice (lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, swiss chard), and growing instructions. We aim to increase accessibility to home grown foods, promote healthy eating habits, and increase awareness of global warming and the urban heat island effect. We will increase awareness of these environmental issues through our project by including informational packets in our gardening kits. We also understand that accessibility to fresh, home-grown food is limited, and would like for our project to help NYC residents learn how to grow their own food in their apartments. As residents of NYC ourselves, we have experienced the difficulties of being restricted to our apartments during the COVID-19 pandemic; therefore, we hope that our project will aid other residents of NYC who may be looking for a calming activity to take their minds off the stress and uncertainty the pandemic has brought on. Currently, our target audience is residents of all five boroughs of NYC and nursing homes in Queens, NY. When it becomes safe, we would also like to expand our audience to children in hospitals and schools in low-income communities around the city. We will also be reaching out to our local food pantries and nursing homes to see if they’d be interested in receiving our gardening kits.
